 WOOSTER, Ohio, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Following is a backgrounder on Wolfgang R. Schmitt, newly elected CEO of Rubbermaid Incorporated (NYSE: RBD):
 Wolfgang R. Schmitt is co-chairman of the board and chief executive officer, and a director of Rubbermaid Incorporated. He is also a member of the boards of directors for Parker Hannifin Corporation, Curver Rubbr?maid Group, the company's European joint venture with DSM, Holland; and Otterbein College.
 His career with Rubbermaid began in 1966 on the management training program. In 1976, he was named director, research and development of the Home Products Division, Rubbermaid's largest and most visible operating business. In that position, Schmitt was responsible for new product development which involved consumer research, design, engineering and mold technology, as well as applied research. He was promoted to vice president in 1978.
 Schmitt became the division's vice president of marketing in 1981 with overall responsibility for strategic planning, new product development, acquisition analysis, market research, consumer advertising, merchandising and public relations.
 In 1984, Schmitt was elected president and general manager of the Home Products Division. Under his management, the division initiated business teams, absorbed its first acquisition, entered totally new markets, and upgraded the technology base of the business. The partnership philosophy was implemented with customers, suppliers, communities and internal associates.
 Over the years, Schmitt has been instrumental in the development of Rubbermaid's strategic vision, numerous new market entries and partnership programs, as well as leading the internal organizational changes to implement the continuous value improvement process and to instill creative innovation throughout the corporation.
 Three times, in 1988, 1991 and 1992, Schmitt was named "Vendor Executive of the Year" for the mass merchandising industry, the only person to receive the honor more than once. The award is presented to the person who demonstrates the greatest commitment to excellence in creating value with mass merchandising retailers.
 In 1992, Schmitt was elected to the Hall of Excellence of the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges, the first honored recipient representing Otterbein College, his alma mater, class of 1966. He also is a graduate of the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program and is a director of the National Housewares Manufacturers Association.
 Schmitt, his wife Toni, and their three sons, Chris, Corey and Clay, live in Wooster, Ohio.
