BA and KLM announce short-term cooperation deal.

AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2002 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

British Airways (BA) and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines have announced their short-term cooperation deal on Middle Eastern routes.

The two airlines, which have tried unsuccessfully in the past to merge, have signed a six-month cooperation agreement covering the Middle East routes, which will commence on 31 March 2002. The pact was due to be announced earlier this month but was delayed as the two airlines discussed details such as customer loyalty issues.

Under the agreement KLM will suspend flights from Amsterdam to Muscat while British Airways will add a flight between London and Muscat to make a daily service. British Airways will suspend its four-times-a-week schedule to Dammam, Saudi Arabia, while KLM will continue with four flights a week from Amsterdam. The carriers will also offer three daily services to and from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, Reuters reported.
