B.A.T INDUSTRIES REPORTS INCREASED PROFITS TO END OF SEPTEMBER
LONDON, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- B.A.T. Industries (AMEX: BTI) today reported its nine month results to Sept. 30, 1992. Highlights were as follows:
-- Pre-tax profit of 1,027 million pounds sterling, up 56 percent, reflecting impressive all round performances and confirming the improving trend seen during the first half of the year. Earnings per share were 105 percent higher at 35.9p.
-- Tobacco: record nine months trading profit of 805 million pounds, up 16 percent. The unrivalled international spread of B.A.T Industries' tobacco business stood the group in good stead with profit increases from each of the principal tobacco operations. Group export volumes grew by 25 percent.
-- Financial services: trading profit of 376 million pounds, a substantial advance on last year's 142 million pounds. The recovery in Eagle Star's general business has continued and Farmers made further excellent progress. Profit from the life companies rose 12 percent to 203 million pounds, while the general businesses recorded a total profit of 173 million pounds from continuing operations, compared with a loss of 39 million pounds last year.
-- Chairman Sir Patrick Sheehy said: "Despite depressed world economic conditions, B.A.T. Industries continues to make real progress. The board remains confident of the group's ability to reward shareholders with sustained dividend growth significantly in excess of the rate of inflation. I expect the 9 percent dividend increase achieved at the half year to be at least maintained for the year as a whole."
