Azerbaijan,Russian Federation : FM - MOSCOW does not seem interested in renewing an expired deal !

The Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan has announced that a deal with Russia to use a cutting-edge radar system has expired and Moscow does not seem interested in renewing the deal.

The deal for the Qabala early-warning radar station ended on December 9, 2012.

With around 1,000 Russian and 500 Azerbaijani servicemen deployed there, it was the last Russian base in Azerbaijan.

The system has a range of nearly 6,000 kmtrs.

Govt. officials of the two countries have been trying to reach an extension since 2011, however Moscow's denial to prolong the deal was due to Azerbaijan's demand to increase the rent.

The initial deal called for payments of $7 million a year but Azerbaijan later raised that sum to $150 million.
