Axis Unveils New Software That Automates Connecting Printers And Print Servers to Networks.

AXIS Auto-Go Software Provides 'One-Click' Installation of Any Printer,

Including Canon, Xerox, Ricoh, Epson, Lexmark and HP

CHELMSFORD, Mass., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Axis Communications, Inc. today released AXIS Auto-Go software which automates connecting printers to a network. The software provides simple "one-click" installation of printers in a TCP/IP environment for Windows 95/98, NT and 2000. AXIS Auto-Go automatically configures the network connection and installs the correct print driver. In addition, embedded Web pages give network managers real-time access to critical information about network traffic and printer status.

"AXIS Auto-Go made installing our printers to the network so simple," said Steve Lessard, president, Lessard and Associates, Toronto. "It was a real time saver for me too. Everything connected quickly and with no fuss."

Software Automates Network Printer Installations

Whenever new printers or digital copiers are added to the network via an Axis print server, AXIS Auto-Go software automatically discovers them, finds and installs the correct printer drivers, and then makes the devices available for sharing. In addition, AXIS Auto-Go provides access to extensive printer and user functions such as duplex, paper tray selection and finishing options such as stapling.

The software works independently in small networks and alongside directory services such as Service Location Protocol (SLP) in larger networks. AXIS Auto-Go is able to provide real time performance information because it uses bi-directional TCP/IP print protocol for exchanging information and status between the printer, print server and user.

New Web Pages Revolutionize Print Server Management

New JavaScripts-based Web pages provide unparalleled detailed information and control over the print server and attached printers. This intuitive interface presents print servers and printers graphically, giving network managers a quick overview of real-time information. By using Printer Job Language (PJL) protocol, the Web pages also offer extensive information about a printer's capabilities and provide real time status about the printer, network and print jobs. A server report function automatically collects a snap-shot of information about printer errors and identifies specific problems that have occurred. These detailed reports can then be e-mailed to Axis technical support for quick resolution of problems. AXIS Auto-Go also provides management functions to the network administrator, such as a flush function to delete running print jobs.

"AXIS Auto-Go saves network managers time and hassle when they add a printer to their network," said Bill Fisher, product marketing manager, Axis Document Division. "The Web interface allows unprecedented control over their print server and attached printers. Even inexperienced print server users will derive immediate benefits from using AXIS Auto-Go."

AXIS 5400 and 5600 Print Servers Offer Best-in-Class Functionality

AXIS Auto-Go software enhances the capabilities of the AXIS 5400 and 5600 print servers. These best-in-class print servers are compatible with all parallel printers, including printers from leading manufactures such as Canon, Epson, Hewlett-Packard, Lexmark, Ricoh and Xerox. They can autosense and negotiate between 10baseT and 100baseT network speeds. The AXIS 5400 and 5600 offer advanced networking solutions that customers expect from Axis, including full-fledged multiprotocol support (28 protocols), multiple operating system support (13), and advanced TCP/IP support. Axis remains on the forefront of technology developments in anticipation of customer requirements, incorporating full support of Linux and NetWare 5.0 for the AXIS 5400 and 5600 print servers.

Pricing and Availability

The AXIS 5400 one-port print server and 5600 three-port print server with AXIS Auto-Go software have suggested retail prices of $339US and $499US respectively. The software is also available as a free download from the company's Web site (www.axis.com) for existing AXIS 5400 and 5600 users. Axis print servers come with a three-year warranty and free lifetime online and dial-in service and support. The products are available now through all major distributors.

Axis ThinServer(TM) Technology Is the Backbone

All Axis products leverage Axis' own ThinServer Technology, which allows any peripheral device to be directly attached to the network without a file server or PC. These devices are displayed on any desktop without changing client software and can be accessed and used by multiple clients using virtually any desktop and network operating system. At the core of the ThinServer Technology is embedded software consisting of self-contained, "thin" versions of popular operating systems, a Web server for consistent, network-wide management, and an optimized 32-bit RISC chip complete with device I/O and network controllers for high-speed data transport.
