Axis Communications Releases Major Upgrade to Print Server Family

New Software Release Brings the Benefits of NDPS, SLP and Other Protocols
To Its Leading Print Server Family

WOBURN, Mass., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Axis Communications, Inc. is extending its position as a world leader in the print server market with a major new software release that supports standards-based protocols and applications such as NDPS, Web JetAdmin, SLP, Direct IPX, TFTP and WINS. Axis will support Novell's NetWare 5.0 through NDPS, which makes print server installation easier with a simple "plug-and-print" single interface instead of three interfaces (printer, print server, and printer queue). This also simplifies feedback of printer and job statuses.

In addition, Axis is adopting and implementing the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Service Location Protocol (SLP) standard to simplify the management and use of networked devices and services (see separate release). The upgrade also supports:

-- Direct IPX, a printing protocol for small workgroups and companies that do not have a file server and would like to print via IPX.

-- Web JetAdmin, a server-based de facto standard printer management tool. Axis print servers are recognized now by printers with not only JetAdmin, but also Web JetAdmin.

-- Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP). TFTP allows for bulk updates to multiple print server IP addresses, thereby significantly reducing the administration required to update networked print servers.

-- Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS), which allows administrators to give print servers recognizable and easy-to-remember names instead of an IP address. This simplifies installation via a web browser and the user can directly use the default print server name instead of an IP address.

Also shipping with this upgrade is the new AXIS NetPilot, offering advanced features for managing print servers in large networks such as improved speed, batch handling, grouping features and sorting.

"As part of our leadership position, we are adopting and adhering to crucial protocols and standards that make our print server family the premier solution for our customers," said David Korf, senior product marketing manager at Axis Communications, Inc. "We are particularly pleased to offer our customers initial support of Novell NetWare 5.0 through NDPS as well as SLP at the beginning of their widespread adoption."

The Axis print server family is compatible by design to support more printers, operating systems and protocols than any other print server offering. From IBM SNA to the ubiquitous TCP/IP, Axis supports all major network platforms with a range of high-performance solutions for printing in workgroups, LANs and corporate enterprise networks.
