Axis Communications Introduces Print Servers for IBM Mainframe and AS/400 Users in TCP/IP Environments.

New protocol support and device management software meet the demands of

enterprise printing

WOBURN, Mass., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Axis Communications, Inc. unveils its AXIS 570e and 670e AFP/IPDS print servers for IBM AS/400 and mainframe enterprise printing. These new print servers give users the flexibility to choose between multiple print methods such as TN3270E and TN5250E, as well as support for SCS and AFP/IPDS datastreams. In addition, the new print servers incorporate AXIS ThinWizard(TM) device management software which makes managing multiple print servers and other Axis products a one-step process. The AXIS 570e and 670e print servers enable high-speed AFP/IPDS printing over Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Token Ring networks without application changes, host-based conversion software or intermediate software.

"Users now have considerable options when printing from the host to the LAN using the AXIS 570e and 670e print servers," said Peter Hanson, business unit manager at Axis Communications, Inc. "Whether with SNA or TCP/IP, SCS or IPDS, Axis print servers offer a broad range of capabilities. What's more, users do not have to change any host applications, making installation simple."

Peter Kennison, systems programmer at Central Maine Power in Augusta, Maine, says, "We have been using the AXIS 570 and 670 product now for the past year, and have found it to be a very flexible solution for printing to the LAN from our host. I am very excited to try the new product with its advanced TCP/IP support as we are moving towards an IP based network. With the new functionality, the Axis product will now offer a wider variety of methods available to us to print from the host."

Flexibility and Speed Key Benefits of New Print Servers

The TN3270E and TN5250E support allows IBM AS/400 and mainframe users migrating to TCP/IP to print while maintaining the management, job control and error reporting that are associated with SNA printing. With the addition of AFP/IPDS datastream support, AS/400 and mainframe users can now choose to print bar codes, form overlays, or any AFP application to their standard LAN attached printers without taxing host CPU cycles and, as a result, speed up the printing process.

The AXIS 570e and 670e support OS/400, OS/390, Windows NT, Windows 95, OS/2, NetWare and more than 20 versions of UNIX. The AXIS 570e and 670e print servers will auto-configure to the AS/400.

ThinWizard Makes Managing Multiple Axis Devices Simple

The AXIS 570e and 560e incorporate AXIS ThinWizard device management software, a new offering from Axis that automatically and instantly discovers and maps all Axis thin server devices on the network to the administrator for simultaneous viewing and updating. This tool supports enterprise-level management of Axis' various network connectivity products. AXIS ThinWizard is built upon Axis' ThinServer(TM) Technology, which is a combination of embedded software, optimized hardware and Web-based management that makes it possible to attach devices to the network without a PC or file server.

AXIS ThinWizard displays the firmware version running on each Axis device and can notify administrators when a new version is available. A download feature enables the firmware to be loaded to a local server or file via a network connection for bulk firmware upgrades, reducing administrative costs. Administrators can also view the status of the devices, and configure them as desired via AXIS ThinWizard. All of these functions are performed through a single Web browser interface.AXIS ThinWizard requires 3.0 MB hard disk space, Java Virtual Machine, and systems running Windows 95/98, Windows NT Workstation and Server, various Linux, SPARC Sun Solaris 2.5.1 and 2.6, or IBM/AIX. AXIS ThinWizard features Java technology for platform independence.

Pricing and Availability

The AXIS 570e print server is designed for Ethernet environments and is priced at $899 retail. The AXIS 670e print server is for Token Ring environments and is priced at $999 retail. These versions of the IBM print server family are available now through major distribution channels.
