Axed airport rail link cost taxpayers PS30m.

Byline: DAVID CLEGG d.clegg@dailyrecord.co.uk

THE Scottish Government blew almost PS30million of taxpayers' money on the doomed Glasgow airport rail link.

Figures show more than PS8million of the total was wasted on botched land deals.

The project for a link from Central Station to the airport was halted in 2009 by Finance Secretary John Swinney.

The total cost of the project came to PS29.1million, including property costs, compensation to landowners and consultancy fees. Only PS359,500 was recouped through selling land that had been bought for the link.

Scottish Labour said: "This is an astonishing waste of our money."

Transport Scotland said around PS176million was saved as a result of scrapping the project.
