Axe for 1,000 as Ethel shops shut; your money.
MORE than 1,000 workers at stricken budget fashion chain Ethel Austin are losing their jobs with the closure of 114 stores over the next few days.
Administrator Geoff Bouchier of MCR said: "In the current economic climate these stores identified for closure did not attract a purchaser."
Another 169 shops will stay open as attempts are made to find a buyer.
MCR has already announced plans to cut 404 jobs at the firm's distribution centre and 65 head office staff from a workforce of about 3,700.
The cheap-as-chips clothing empire, founded 76 years ago, collapsed along with sister company Au Naturale after fierce competition from bargain basement stores such as Primark and Matalan.
