Awarding Ceremony of the Japan Academy Medal.

The fourteenth award ceremony for the JSPS Prize, offered by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, and the Japan Academy Medal was held on from 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 7, 2018, in the presence of Their Imperial Highnesses Prince and Princess Akishino. In the first part of the ceremony, the JSPS Prize was awarded to 25 scientists and, in the second part, the Japan Academy Medal was presented to six scientists selected from among the recipients of the JSPS Prize.

Before the Japan Academy Medal presentations, President of the Japan Academy delivered an introductory address. Then, Selection Committee chair Dr. Makoto NAGAO, M.J.A., outlined the selection process for the Medal, which is awarded to encourage the recipients in their work, and described the research initiatives of each recipient. The awardees, who received a silver medal and certificate, are as follows:

Yumiko KAMADA "Carpets That Bind the World: Indian Carpets and Their Journey toward the Kyoto Gion Festival from a Perspective of Global History"

Masaaki KOMATSU "Elucidation of the Role of Aberrant Selective Autophagy in Pathogenic Mechanisms of Digestive Diseases"

Toshiro SATO "Development of Organoid Culture System for Elucidation of Human Diseases"

Shinsuke SANDO "Development of Hyperpolarized NMR Molecular Probes for Sensing and Imaging Biological Systems"

So NAKAYA "Research on State Formation in Late Medieval Italy"

Akimasa HirATA "Integrated Simulation Techniques for Multiphysics and Physiological Response and Their Application"

Finally, congratulatory addresses were given by His Imperial Highness Prince AKISHINO and the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Speaking on behalf of the JSPS Prize and Japan Academy Medal recipients, Dr. KAMADA expressed the group's delight at having been selected for this special recognition and their appreciation to co-workers and colleagues as well as to all in attendance. The ceremony ended at 1:00 p.m.
