Avanex Adds to Industry-Leading Optical Amplifiers With New Platform for L-Band Transmissions.

Avanex Corporation today announced an extension of its well-established line of optical amplification solutions with the introduction of an erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) platform for L-band transmissions in long-haul and metro applications.

Avanex's L-band amplifier s, part of the company's comprehensive array of optical subsystems, modules and components, leverage the company's market-leading position in C-band amplifiers and provide superior performance, reliability, and cost advantages over custom L-band solutions.

"The addition of optical amplifiers for L-band transmissions gives service providers the benefits of our field-proven technology as they either expand capacity or deploy new optical fiber links utilizing L-band transmission, which significantly increases overall information transmission capacity," Dr. Giovanni Barbarossa, Avanex's Chief Technology Officer and Vice President, Active Components, said. "Our L-band solutions are designed to minimize current customers' engineering expense and enable faster time to market by allowing them to capitalize existing product design devised for our C-band offerings."

"The first implementations of L-band amps were highly customized and did not make significant use of techniques learned from the volume deployment of C-band amplifiers. Our newest L-band amplifiers are built from a solid platform architecture that leverages much of the electronic and mechanical componentry of C-band amplifiers. This allows us to meet the individual needs of customers, with competitive costs and with faster time-to-market."

The addition of a line of L-band optical amplifiers also gives Avanex opportunities in new markets where dispersion-shifted (DS) fiber is widely deployed and has improved L-band transmission capability. In new deployments, Avanex's L-band amplifiers also offer best-in-class electronic controls architecture, which is now enjoyed by Avanex's C-band amplifiers. As a result, the new L-band amplifiers provide best-in-class optical transient response from the outset.

Avanex's other amplification solutions such as its PureGain(TM) 2600 Variable Gain EDFA for Metropolitan Networks and PureGain(TM) 5500 Variable Gain EDFA for Long-Haul Networks are recognized as industry leaders.

These and other leading optical subsystems, modules and components from Avanex will be on display during OFC/NFOEC 2005, which is being held March 8-10 in the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif. Avanex will be in Booth #2041 in Hall C.
