We are happy to bring out this special issue on Automation and its applications in Mechanical Engineering and Material Science. We have organized the 2012 International Conference on Mechanical Engineering, Automation and Material Science (MEAMS 2012) at China which proved to be a good platform for engineers, scientists, researchers in Mechanical Engineering, Automation and Material Science fields.
With the rapid development of Mechanical technology, researchers in all fields begin to discuss some new ideas connected with Mechanical Engineering, Automation and Material Science. The MEAMS 2012 has given a valuable opportunity for researchers, scholars and some scientists to exchange their ideas face to face together. MEAMS2012 is very special for its strong organization team, dependable reputation and wide sponsors all around the world.
From the MEAMS, we have selected top 16 papers based on the quality and relevance to the scope of the Journal of Digital Information Management. This issue has 11 papers and the further 5 papers will be accommodated in the next issue of the Journal of Digital Information Management. These papers are selected based on the originality in content and the authors were asked to revise the papers in accordance with the reviews. Hence we are convinced that the issue has high quality papers. We are thankful to the Chief Editor and the publishers for bringing out this special issues.

Dr. Gongfa Li received the Ph.D. degree in mechanical design and theory from Wuhan University of Science and Technology in China. Currently, he is a professor at Wuhan University of Science and Technology, China. His major research interests include modeling and optimal control of complex industrial process, mechanical engineering. He is invited as a reviewer by the editors of some international journals, such as Environmental Engineering and Management Journal, International Journal of Engineering and Technology, International Journal of Physical Sciences, International Journal of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, etc. He has published nearly thirty papers in related journals.
Dr Tinggui Chen is an Assistant Professor of the School of Computer and Information Engineering, Zhejiang Gongshang University, P. R. China. He graduated from the Jianghan University and earned his B.S. degree in Mechanical design. Then, he received the M.S. degree in industrial engineering from the Wuhan University of Science and Technology and his Ph. D degree in engineering management from Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
Hegen Xiong received the Ph.D. degree in materials processing engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China, in 2005. He is a Professor of College of Machinery and Automation, Wuhan University of Science and Technology. Currently, his research interests are manufacturing information, job shop scheduling, flow shop scheduling and computer aided engineering.
