Author Ed Rosenthal, who has written books about how to grow marijuana, went on trial on Tuesday (21 January) on federal charges of illegally cultivating pot.

Rosenthal claims that he was growing marijuana to help the sick, which is legal under Californian law, but two years ago the US Supreme Court ruled it a violation of federal drug laws for medical marijuana clubs to dispense pot.

Following a seizure of around 3,000 plants at Rosenthal's Oakland warehouse the author could face a life sentence if convicted.
