Australian Foreign Ministry: Iran detains 3 of our citizens.
BAGHDAD (NINA) - The Australian government said on Wednesday that three of its citizens have been detained by Iranian authorities and their families are being helped to find out the reasons for the detention through diplomatic channels. The Australian Foreign Ministry statement said that after the British newspaper Times reported that two women with Australian and British citizenship and a friend of one of them were detained in Iran." "The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade provides consular assistance to the families of three Australians held in Iran and will not provide further details of our commitment to privacy," the statement said. A blog that was traveling in Asia with her Australian friend and a lecture taught at an Australian university was detained in two separate incidents, the Times said. The newspaper did not name the two citizens under a request from the British Foreign Office and said the Australian government was handling the cases. This comes amid escalating tensions between Western powers and Iran after the United States withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal and re-imposed sanctions on Tehran aimed at halting Iranian oil exports./ End
