Australia : Victorian firefighting teams in Canada commended.

Victorian firefighters and expert personnel have commenced their return home after assisting in recent Canadian fires, Minister for Police and Emergency Services and Bushfire Response Kim Wells has announced.

After a four-week campaign helping British Columbia crews tackle a long and challenging fire season, Mr Wells commended the 51 Victorian fire fighting crews for their efforts.

Our fire fighting personnel were highly praised by their Canadian counterparts for their effort and attitude. They have represented Australia and Victoria proudly, going above and beyond the call of duty, Mr Wells said.

I commend and thank our Victorian firefighting personnel for responding to the call, and helping our Canadian friends during a particularly difficult fire season.

Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith said that Victorians should be very proud of those involved in this major deployment to British Columbia.

The reports from British Columbia indicate the Victorians expert assistance and experience was an invaluable part of the response to the wildfires and that their excellent work is profoundly appreciated, Mr Smith said.

Thank you also to the families of our firefighters and agency personnel their understanding and support is essential to an effective overseas deployment.

The DEPI, CFA, SES, MFB, Parks Vic and Melbourne Water crews joined more than 3,000 Canadian personnel in fireline and support roles across British Columbia.

Up to 80 Australian personnel were deployed right across British Columbia, from the Rocky Mountains to the central plateau and beyond. The deployment ended when fire conditions eased.
