Australia : Site works start at Exmouth Boat Harbour.

The Exmouth Boat Harbour upgrade continues to progress with the second stage of the project, including site preparation for the construction of the new facilities starting this month.

Transport Minister Dean Nalder said with the majority of the planning and design works for the upgrade now completed, on-site works for the $18.275 million upgrade had begun.

The contract for early on-site civil works, including the installation and relocation of services, has been awarded to WBHO Infrastructure Pty Ltd. The major works contract for the upgrade is yet to be awarded with a tender process currently under way.

"Once completed, Exmouth Boat Harbour will be better equipped to meet growing demand from recreational and commercial users in the region," Mr Nalder said.

Mr Nalder said the new facilities would allow Exmouth and the Gascoyne region increased capacity and efficiency as a service and support centre for the oil and gas sector.

The State Government's Royalties for Regions investment includes an extension to the service wharf, construction of a heavy lift facility and associated landside wharf infrastructure.

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the upgrade would encourage new business, employment and training opportunities in the region, with up to 72 jobs being provided during construction.

Mr Redman thanked North West Central MLA Vince Catania for his hard work in helping to progress the project to this crucial stage.

"As the largest harbour in the region, the upgrade recognises the important role Exmouth has to play in supporting the growing maritime industry in the resource-rich Pilbara region," he said.

Planning and design for stage two of the upgrade incorporated input from key harbour users and stakeholders. Consultation with stakeholders will continue as the project moves to the implementation stage.
