Australia : Report identifies future pathways for south-east forestry industry.

Industry leadership will be fundamental to implementing a series of innovative recommendations contained in a major report into the south-east forestry industry released in Mount Gambier tonight.

Releasing Stage 2 of the Cellulose Fibre Chain Study, Manufacturing, Innovation and Trade Minister, Tom Kenyon said the State Government would continue to work closely with the industry and investors to support higher-value added investment in the region.

This significant report provides a clear roadmap of higher value-added pathways for the south-east forestry industry, Mr Kenyon said.

As an initial response, the State Government will subsidise a study tour to Scandinavia in late November for members of the south-east forestry industry so they can gain an insight into higher value-added activities, clusters and cellulose fibre players in the region.

The 12 month Cellulose Fibre Chain Study involved the VTT Technical Research Centre in Finland working with local firms to identify market opportunities for higher value-added forestry products.

The two stage VTT study funded by $830,000 from the State Government and $250,000 from the Federal Government has made a number of major recommendations for the medium to long-term future of the industry.

They include options for the short (3-5 years), medium (5-10 years) and long-term (greater than 10 years), Mr Kenyon said.

VTT has identified three pathways representing the more immediate options and four pathways for longer-term opportunities.

The pathways with a 3-5 year horizon include:

new wood products from underutilised Green Triangle log supplies

value-adding opportunities in the construction industry and

bio-refining value adding opportunities for underutilised wood fibre and residues.

The pathways beyond a 5 year horizon include:

develop use of cellulose membranes unconventional ideas may include transparent cellulose based packaging materials

cellulose fibres in textiles

bio-based chemicals and polymers and

opportunities in nano-cellulose.
