Australia : Mt Wellington Cable Car Project.
The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to enhancing our award winning tourism industry, including through sensible and sustainable development within our iconic national parks and other reserves.
The Mt Wellington Cableway Company has requested its cable car project be assessed as a Project of State Significance (POSS).
Before a project can be granted POSS status it must meet a range of eligibility criteria established under the State Policies and Projects Act 1993 (Act). This includes attributes such as making a significant contribution to Tasmanias economic development and having regard for its impact on the environment.
The Hodgman Liberal Government has determined that the Tasmanian Development Board should review the Mt Wellington Cable Car Project and assess the projects suitability for POSS status.
The Board will review detailed information supplied by the proponent and make an assessment of the financial viability of the project as well as the financial and technical capacity of the proponent to deliver the project. The Board will also undertake an assessment of the projects suitability to proceed as a POSS having regard to the eligibility criteria under the Act as well as any other incidental matters.
Based on advice from the Board, the Coordinator-General will then make a recommendation to Cabinet for its consideration.
If the project is granted POSS status it will then be subject to a full assessment process by the Tasmanian Planning Commission, including public consultation and hearings.
The Hodgman Liberal Government is a strong supporter of sensible development on kunanyi/Mount Wellington. A cable car on the mountain has been the source of public debate for more than 100 years. There has been public debate about the Mt Wellington Cable Car project itself for some time. The Government is committed to giving the project an opportunity to be properly considered. If the project is to proceed through to planning stage the Government is committed to doing so in a way that ensures the public can have their say.
