Australia : Live Export Trade Needs Real Solutions.

The Northern Territory s Primary Industry Minister Willem Westra van Holthe has labelled the Federal Government s recent announcement of appointing an independent animal welfare inspector as a vote grabbing exercise designed to placate the Greens and animal welfare lobby.

The appointment of an independent animal welfare inspector shows that the Federal Agriculture Minister Joel Fitzgibbon has little faith in his Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry to do their job, ensuring the welfare of animals exported from Australia, Mr Westra van Holthe said.

This is clearly a vote grabbing exercise to placate the Greens and animal welfare lobbyists.

Federal Labour s ban on the Live Export Trade to Indonesia in 2011 hurt a lot of Territory businesses, from pastoralists to trucking companies, and created job losses and huge financial strain.

These businesses - many of them family owned - are still struggling to recover, he said.

The Federal Minister must assure industry that the appointment of an independent welfare inspector will not serve to make life more difficult for those businesses involved in the Live Export Trade by adding an additional layer of red tape and adding to the regulatory burden.

I wonder whether Joel Fitzgibbon has considered any impacts of this announcement on our live cattle trading partners, Mr Westra van Holthe said.

Perhaps he should pick up the telephone and call his Indonesian counterpart.
