Australia : Joint Statement on Disaster Assistance for Communities in North Queensland.

Disaster assistance has been made available for the local government areas of Burdekin, Charters Towers, Etheridge, Palm Island Aboriginal Shire and Townsville, which were affected by flooding in late February and early March 2018.

Assistance is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA). Minister for Law Enforcement and Cyber Security Angus Taylor, who has responsibility for Commonwealth disaster assistance, said that funding is being made available through the NDRRA to support response operations and repair flood damaged assets.

The low pressure system moving across North Queensland has caused significant rainfall and flooding across the region, Mr Traylor said. In the Townsville area alone, over 300mm of rainfall has fallen in the last week. More broadly across the region, flood waters have affected numerous communities, particularly because of road closures and debris damage.

This assistance demonstrates our commitment to act quickly and ensure local governments can get on with the job of cleaning up debris and repairing damaged roads.

Queensland Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Craig Crawford, who inspected floodwater damage in Townsville on Friday, said it was a priority to ensure that affected communities get the assistance they need. While the rain was certainly welcome in Townsville, a large amount of it fell over the city, causing infrastructure to be damaged, Mr Crawford said. Authorities have switched into recovery mode, and crews have been out and about assessing any damage.

More rainfall is expected to fall over the coming days that could cause further flooding in other local government areas. We will continue to monitor the situation and will extend assistance under the NDRRA to other affected communities as required.
