Australia : Government acting on Custodial Inspector.

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to openness and accountability across Government services, which is why we will introduce legislation next week to establish an independent Custodial Inspector for Tasmanias prison system.

The Custodial Inspector will provide independent external scrutiny into all aspects of prisons and detention centres in Tasmania, and I am pleased that the recent 2016-17 Budget allocated funding of $575,000 to establish the position within the office of the Ombudsman.

The establishment of a Custodial Inspector fulfils a key recommendation of the Palmer Report on the Risdon Prison Complex, and will focus on issues relating to the management, control and security of the State's prisons and youth detention centre, as well as the care and welfare of prisoners and detainees.

The Custodial Inspector will play an important role for the future of corrections in Tasmania, and it has taken a majority Liberal Government to progress real action on establishing this important position.
