Australia : Delivering High-Quality Services: New Palliative Care Centre for Central Australia.
The Australian and Northern Territory Governments are dramatically improving end-of-life care services in Central Australia with todays opening of the ampere amantye-akeme palliative care centre.
The 10-bed facility was built with $5.3 Million Australian Government funding and $1 Million from the Northern Territory Government.
The Federal Minister for Indigenous Affairs Nigel Scullion and Northern Territory Minister for Health Natasha Fyles today opened the facility in Alice Springs.
Minister Scullion said the service will be a significant help to many patients and families both in Alice Springs and right across Central Australia.
The Australian Government listened to concerns from Central Australian residents about the need for appropriate services and responded with significant funding for a purpose built facility, he said.
This facility provides more options in relation to dedicated inpatient end-of-life care, and includes the option of respite care to support families who wish to continue to care for their loved ones at home.
This is the first dedicated palliative care facility in the region and it includes private garden spaces and a bush medicine garden with rooms opening up to a patio area.
The facility will operate 24 hours a day and has the capacity to accommodate a support person overnight.
Minister Fyles said Central Australians deserve access to high quality end of life care and this purpose built facility helps to deliver that.
End of life care is a critical time for patients and their family, its important to get it right, she said.
Weve consulted extensively with community stakeholders to get the design right and make sure it caters appropriately to Central Australias Indigenous population.
The centres team includes an eight member community service team and 11 new nursing positions.
This facility is so important to the community and is something all Members of Parliament from Central Australia have lobbied hard for.
The facility has been named ampere amantye-akeme, the Central Arrernte word meaning Comfort House.
