Australia : Beyond Sustainable to Carbon Neutral.
The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) congratulates Austral Fisheries on selling its first carbon neutral catch.
After becoming carbon neutral certified in April 2016, Austral Fisheries recently sold the first ever carbon neutral unload for Marine Stewardship Council certified Heard and McDonald Islands Toothfish in an auction to China and the USA.
AFMAs CEO, Dr James Findlay, said that it is great to see the fishing industry support carbon neutral fishing practices.
Seafood lovers are looking for product that is sustainable and environmentally friendly and the sale of Australs first shipment of carbon neutral fish is something Australians can be proud of, Dr Findlay said.
AFMAs science-based management of Commonwealth commercial fisheries ensures that they are some of the best managed in the world. I am pleased that companies like Austral are prepared to lead the world when it comes to reducing the environmental effects of fishing.
Austral is the worlds first certified carbon neutral seafood business and has boats fishing from the Antarctic to the tropics, with operations in the Heard Island and McDonald Islands Fishery, in the Southern Ocean; and the Northern Prawn Fishery in Australias top end.
