Australia: Lonhro warms up for Northerly showdown.

Byline: Syd Brennan

AUSTRALIAN star Lonhro continued his winning ways on Saturday when gaining his 16th win from 22 starts in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes at Warwick Farm, writes Syd Brennan.

A red-hot favourite at 1-4, Lonhro raced in fourth place to the home turn, and just needed to be ridden out with hands and heels to the line to beat Shogun Lodge (8-1) by a length and a quarter, with Dress Circle (50-1) a short neck away in third.

"I don't think he's ever been better, but he's going to need to be from now on," trainer John Hawkes said.

Hawkes is mindful of the fact that Lonhro will be pitted against the likes of top-class performers Northerly and Defier in the near future.

He added: "I'm looking forward to taking them on. There are going to be some races worth seeing from now on."

Earlier in the day Niello, a two-year-old brother to Lonhro, showed he has inherited much of the family's ability by winning the Kindergarten Stakes in impressive fashion.

Having only his second race, Niello pushed through a narrow opening a furlong out and finished strongly to beat his stablemate Dorky by a length and a quarter.

"He's a different colour to Lonhro but the two horses are very similar," stable representative Peter Snowden said. "The same head and neck, the same body, and the same will to win."

As well as winning with Lonhro and Niello, trainer Hawkes and owners Jack and Bob Ingham teamed up to win another three races on the card.
