Aussie sires bowl rest over in the Steel City.

M AGNA FLINTOFF'S gallant bid to become the first British-bred Steel City Cup winner since Jerrys Surprise in 2001 was unavailing against a mighty run from Bandicoot Tipoki, who beat him by over a length despite not making the best of starts.

The result was perfect for the three Australian sires who had finalists, the winner and second being by Crash and Brett Lee respectively, with third place filled by Elite State whelp Farloe Titan.

Winner of the Midland Puppy Derby five months ago, Bandicoot Tipoki emulated the same big-race double accomplished by Blonde Dino, but in much quicker order, the latter's Sheffield victory being achieved 18 months after his Monmore triumph.

Elsewhere on the gala Sheffield card, trebles were the order of the night for stud dog Westmead Hawk and trainer Seamus Cahill, the latter of whom kicked off proceedings by sending out Carden Bert to break the 480m clock - the third time it has gone down this year.

Running a fast 3.15sec split, the wide-seeded June 2007 son of Brett Lee-Bell Sensation scored by half a length in 27.66sec (+60), taking ten spots off the mark set by Farloe Firefox in June. The Lyon family-owned black had won a decent Sittingbourne open last time out, after reaching the Sussex Cup semis, and has now racked up five opens wins from 475 to 515m.

He is thus a major contributor to the tally of 25 opens won this year by greyhounds bred in Co. Cork by Dennis Wilson, who acquired Bell Sensation for breeding after she had won 15 opens for Linda Jones, at trips from 375 to 575m.

An early paced railer, the daughter of Doyou Getit went closest to a big purse when, running from trap six, she was beaten a head by El Ronan in the pounds 2,000 Racing Post Festival Derby. Prior to her Brett Lee litter, she had thrown open winners by Honcho Classic, including Yarmouth's pounds 2000 Kronenbourg Sprint third Carden Jimmy.

Reading Masters ace Douyou Getit sired her from the Jonestrained More Heat, an A1 Romford grader and 400m open winner who ran sixth in Crayford's 380m Rose Bowl. By the former champion sprinter Ravage Again, she was out of More Pop, whose dam Curryhills Popsy broke Newbridge's 600 yards record back in 1985.
