Aussie clue to origins of man.

Stone tools and rock art found in Australia have sparked fresh speculation on the origins of humans.

The discoveries show an advanced civilisation may have lived there between 116,000 and 176,000 years ago.

The finds suggest modern humans originated in Asia, then sailed to Australia.

Previously, primitive man was thought to have emerged from Africa 120,000 years ago.

The discoveries also include rock engravings dating back 58,000 to 75,000 years.

That is twice as old as French paintings, traditionally felt to mark the beginnings of art.
