Aurian Viva Bird.
Longtime member of the CYCA, Aurian Viva Bird of Pymble, passed away peacefully in Hornsby District Hospital on 29 August, six weeks short of her 90th birthday.
Aurian joined the CYCA in 1976 with her husband John 'Dickie' Bird, now deceased. She was also a longstanding committee member of the CYCA Associates Committee and held the position of treasurer for over 20 years.
She will be remembered for her hard work and commitment to the committee, especially her involvement in the inaugural Parade of Sail. Each year she arranged for a RAN chaplain to officiate the parade and the blessing of the fleet.
Aurian was also instrumental in sourcing the Jane Tate Memorial Trophy, which is presented to women who have competed in 15 Sydney Hobarts.
Aurian was made an honorary life member of RANSA in 1994. She joined the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) in 1939 and in the 1950s she was part of the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS). Aurian will be remembered by her three sons, Christopher, Adrian and Jeremy, plus her many friends at the CYCA and RANSA.
