Auctions for old books and photos.

A signed first edition of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's A Study in Scarlet (1887) went for $15,000 at a recent auction; a 13-panel panorama of San Francisco photographed in 1868 by Eadweard Muybridge sold for $37,500. While classic works draw dramatic bids, the average prices of books and photographs are far less. If you'd like to watch such auctioneering or try bidding, here are some events in San Francisco and Los Angeles you can attend free of charge.

On June 2 in San Francisco, the gavel will fall at California Book Auction's first-edition book sale. On July 1, "Photographica Eleven," also conducted by California Book Auction, will take place in Hollywood. Then on July 17 in Los Angeles, the G. Ray Hawkins Gallery on Melrose Avenue will auction valuable photographic prints.

First editions. Dashiell Hammett, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Ian Fleming, and John Steinbeck are among the authors whose works will go on the aution block in San Francisco at noon on June 2 at California Book Auction Galleries, 358 Golden Gate Avenue. The auction of modern first editions will cover the genres of detective writing, fiction, and science fiction. First editions of famous authors may sell for thousands; those of lesser-known writers will be abundant and less expensive.

Photography. The "Photographica Eleven" auction will begin at noon July 1 in the Women's Clug of Hollywood, 1749 N. La Brea Avenue. It will offer mainly works of 19th-century Western photographers, including Carleton Watkins and William Henry Jackson, as well as a series of orotones (photographs printed on glass backed with a gold powder).

In Los Angeles, the Hawkins Gallery, 7224 Melrose Avenue, will hold its auction on July 17 from noon to 3. Most offerings will be 20th-century photographs, with better-known works by Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Andre Kertesz, and Edward Weston.
