Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), [India], Mar 7 (ANI): A day after two Kashmiri dry fruit sellers were attacked in Lucknow, the wife of the main accused Bajrang Sonkar defended him, saying that it should have been done by the police long back.
The attack was allegedly carried out by the Vishwa Hindu Dal (VHD) and four accused including the organisation's city president Bajrang Sonkar, pradesh president Himanshu Awasthi, North Vidhan Sabha vice president Anirudh and Aman Mishra, were arrested by the local police on Thursday.
They will be presented in the court by this evening.
While speaking to ANI, Sonkar's wife Prerna said: "My husband didn't do anything wrong. He did something which should have been done by the police. It is the police which never took any action on Kashmiris who make an excuse to put their shops here so that they can collect information. I am opposing my husband's arrest."
According to Prerna, police came to arrest her husband at 2 o'clock in the night and took him away. "My husband is not well educated. He doesn't even know how to use Facebook. He runs a vegetable shop and police have seized both his cell phones."
A video of the incident which occurred in the Daliganj area became viral showing some men dressed in saffron kurtas beating a vendor with a long stick. After receiving a few blows, the man managed to free himself from the attackers.
The other vendor was seen collecting his things while being slapped and hit by one of the men. He is prevented from further assault after few locals intervened.
VHD activists, meanwhile, raised slogans against the police administration and Pakistan when the accused were being taken for a medical check-up.
"We oppose their arrest and we will give a memorandum to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. We will continue our protest till our people are released," said VHD national president Ambuj Nigam.
Earlier in the day, Lucknow's Senior Superintendent of Police Kalanidhi Naithani had told media that the main accused has a long criminal history.
"The main culprit Bajrang Sonkar has been arrested. Sonkar has a criminal background and has 12 cases including a murder case filed against him. His accomplice Amar Kumar, Aniruddh Kumar and Himanshu Garg are absconding and attempts are on to arrest them. They had formed a trust, Vishwa Hindu Dal Trust and accused are associated with the trust."
A case on the incident has been registered under sections 147, 323, 504, 153, 307 of IPC. (ANI)
