Athletics: Dick backs Lewis coac.

FRANK DICK has launched a staunch defence of Denise Lewis' controversial throwing coach Dr Ekkart Arbeit.

But International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge believes it would be wise for Lewis to sever her ties with Arbeit.

Arbeit is a former coach to the East German athletics team and the man held responsible for the state- sponsored doping programme.

Dick, head coach to Olympic heptathlon champion Lewis, says Arbeit deserves a second chance.

``I look at someone's skills first and didn't consider for a moment judging someone's history from about 15 years ago,'' saidDick.

Rogge voiced his concerns in an article in the Sunday Times.

Speaking about Lewis' decision to bring Arbeit on board,he said: ``It is not a good idea and I say that very clearly.

``It is the wrong decision from a perception point of view.''
