CAPTAIN Marlon Devonish led by example as he claimed a thrilling victory in the 200m at the European Cup Super League meeting in Munich yesterday.

Devonish secured a third win for Great Britain to add to those achieved by Craig Pickering (100m) and the 4x100m relay squad in the opening session - and rose to the top of the European rankings with his display.

The Olympic 4x100m relay gold medallist maintained his concentration in a tight race down the home straight to win in a quick time of 20.33seconds.

His efforts and those of Michael Rimmer, Andy Turner and Phillips Idowu, who claimed second places in the 800m, 110m hurdles and triple jump respectively, saw the Norwich Union GB side finish fourth overall behind France who retained the title on countback ahead of Germany and Poland.

The European championship bronze medallist said: "It was a great race. I drove out of the blocks quick. I am really satisfied with the result."

The 31-year-old clocked an exceptional 10.08secs for 100m in last week's IAAF Golden League meeting in Oslo and he believes there is further improvement to come.

He added: "I was very nervous because as team captain I wanted to set an example. I like this position. I feel like the father of the team since we have many young boys here."

Rimmer, 21, displayed his potential when he narrowly lost to Pawel Czapiewski by just 0.06secs when clocking 1min 49.06secs behind the Pole. Hurdler Turner clinched second place in 13.48secs behind France's world champion Ladji Doucoure.

Idowu took second spot with his very last attempt with a face-saving clearance of 17.21metres.

The British women's side secured promotion to the Super League when they dominated the European Cup First League 'A' fixture in Vaasa, Finland.

There were a further five victories achieved yesterday with wins for Abby Westley (1500m), Joice Maduaka (200m), Jo Pavey (5000m) and Hatti Dean - with a UK 3,000m steeplechase record - plus the 4x400m relay squad.
