Atari files for bankruptcy: Is it finally game over for the video game pioneer?

India, Jan. 23 -- Atari has filed for bankruptcy in the US in order to break away from its debt-laden French parent. Atari has been closely associated with French company Infogrames since 2000, which changed its name to Atari S.A. from just Atari.

After filing for bankruptcy, Atari hopes to be purchased by another company that will shape its future in the growing mobile gaming business.

In the recent past, Atari has brought its classic games such as Pong, Asteroid and more to the mobile platform.

Established in 1971, by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney as Syzygy Engineering, Atari went on to become a household name in the gaming business. It started out making arcade games, then made its way into people's homes, and can easily be credited for building the foundation for home consoles. The Atari 2600 can be considered the first home gaming console.

Atari became a household name in the video game business with games such as Pong, Asteroid, Space Invaders 3, Combat, Pitfall, and many more.

In 2012, Atari celebrated its 40th birthday. We have an opinion piece that gives an in-depth look at the rise and fall of Atari.
