At the double; back in time.

Byline: DEREK SYDENHAM

THE Mercury's nostalgic trip led me to dig out an old photo from when Paganel Road School won the Kalamazoo Shield in 1954-55.

We beat Bournville 1-0 in the final played at Elliott Sports Ground on Gibbons Road, Selly Oak after a goal from Dennis Greening. We were presented with our medals and the trophy by the Lord Mayor.

We 'did the double' that year as we also won the Kings Norton League. John Bersey was top goal-scorer. I think I'm right in saying those wins remain the only silverware the school ever won.

Back row: Mr Beaumont (head master), Maurice Wiggins, Colin Portlock, David Barratt (goalkeeper), Mr Jones (teacher), Billy Tucker, Barry Whittaker, Mr Culliford (Teacher). Front row: Roger Kettle, Robert James, Roy Hampson, Derek Sydenham (captain), John Bersey, Robert Lawton, Dennis Greening.
