Astronomer Assassin?

Bob Naeye wrote that he thought he was talking to James Bond when he saw the high-tech equipment Bruce Berger was lugging to Brazil (July issue, page 6).

When I went to Tahiti a few years ago, I took a small metal case with a 5-inch SCT and an attache case with foam cutouts for eyepieces, etc. Nobody in any airport batted an eye. But at my hotel in Papeete, an obviously bright, bare-chested young bellhop asked what I had. When I showed him the scope and accessories, he said it looked like I was a hired assassin. That's pretty close to James Bond!
