Assamese craftsman carves out bamboo made cutlery.

Tinsukia (Assam), Aug.26 (ANI): Believe it or not, a craftsman in Assam's Tinsukia District has carved out eco-friendly cutlery in different shape, sizes and designs with bamboo.

It includes knives, forks, spoons, a bi-forked knife, butter knives and many other things.

According to Tridib Mahanta, as eco-friendly items are in high demand now a days he felt driven to design eco-friendly cutlery by using bamboo.

"As there is a new trend of eco-friendly things, I also thought of designing eco-friendly cutlery. I tried to make it. I thought that bending is not possible with glass material and glass is breakable material and does not have fibre, so I tried out designing cutlery with bamboo. There is a large quantity of bamboo available in Assam, so there is no shortage of raw material. So when I tried, I was successful in designing cutlery with bamboo," he said.

He says the advantage of his bamboo-made items is that they are eco friendly and 100 percent heat resistant.

The unique quality about this cutlery is that they have got the perfect bends and curves, Mahanta adds.

He has also designed cutlery-measuring 3.5mm, precisely the size of a grain of rice. The cutlery is carved out of bamboo.

Mahanta says that though it is tiny, it carries intricate designs. The set of the smallest cutlery has knife, fork, spoon, a bi-forked knife and butter knife.

Mahanta's art has been appreciated both nationally and internationally and he has got CII seal of excellence. However he prefers to be known as 'the bamboo fork man of Assam.'

He claims that his creation is the smallest cutlery in the world though the Guinness Records does not have a category for it. by Peter Alex Todd (ANI)
