Aspin given chance to bring success.

GATESHEAD have handed manager Neil Aspin a new deal to keep him at the International Stadium until 2018.

The Tynesiders have made a wonderful start to the new season in the National League and hammered former Football League side York City 6-1 in midweek.

Aspin's No 2 Lee Nogan has also extended his stay with the Heed.

A club statement read: "We can announce Neil Aspin and Lee Nogan have extended their contracts with us."

Chairman Richard Bennett said: "I am thrilled to secure the services of Neil and Lee until June 2018.

"They are an integral part of the club and the club's development. We are busy building a squad for the future and feel it is imperative the management team know they are contracted for the same time as the players.

"Our working relationship is very solid and we believe this will bring a sense of stability to the club."

Gateshead midfielder Paddy McLaughlin praised Aspin's management this week.

With the Heed unlucky to be pegged level to a dubious penalty, the Irishman said: "The manager came in at half-time and said, 'Look - we have had an injustice, just regain your focus and go out and do the same again.' "We were always confident if we did that we would come through."

The Tynesiders responded to Aspin's half-time team talk by scoring five goals after the break. The performance even resulted in the BBC's top commentator Guy Mowbray joking after the game that York should immediately "poach" Aspin.
