Ask Dr Miriam.

Byline: MIRIAM STOPPARD

Q I noticed on your page recently that you suggested to someone with constipation to add bran to their diet. How can I boost the amount of bran I eat?

A Start the day with a high-bran cereal. There is a whole range of bran flakes, so you may have to change from the current breakfast cereal that you are eating. You can even get a pillow-style bran cereal as an alternative to sweetened puffed wheat.

Then try to eat wholemeal versions of foods, such as spaghetti, tortillas, pitta bread and, of course, wholemeal bread.

You can also find things, such as bran biscuits and bran crackers, on the supermarket shelves. And, if you are really keen, you can buy bran from a health food store that you can add to your food in cooking.

A particularly effective form of bran is psyllium husks, which you can also dissolve in fruit juice to have as a healthy drink.
