I visited my dentist and he's told me that I have lichen planus in my mouth.
Sometimes I get mouth ulcers but the dentist said this is different. What is lichen planus?
A Well, you have a very good dentist to have spotted lichen planus which is a fairly common, slightly itchy, non-infectious rash that mostly affects adults.
The mouth is a very common site, as is any place where the skin becomes moist like thes genital area in men and women. The cause isn't known but it's probably due to a dysfunction of the immune system. When the rash is on the body it has slightly raised, purplish-red, shiny spots with a flat surface. In most patients lichen planus clears up within 18 months and doesn't return although you can have a second episode many years later.
Your doctor or dentist can give you a sticky paste which will adhere to the itchy spots.
