Asian Games: A gold for painting.
Incheon: Zhapanov Dinmukhamad of Kazakhstan celebrated a rare gold medal for painting at the closing ceremony of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.
The 13-year-old Dinmukhamad was the winner of the "Asian Kids Art Competition," organised by the Olympic Council of Asia's (OCA) Cultural Committee that is chaired by Mohammad Al Kamali, General Secretary, UAE National Olympic Committee.
The competition, open to kids from all 45 OCA members, was for children between 11 to 15 years. The top five paintings were chosen and displayed at the Athletes' Village so that participating sportspersons could vote for the best three through the course of the competition.
Dinmukhamad was followed by Victor Emmanuel Darnell Nadera from the Philippines, while the UAE's Noura Khalid Abdul Wahad Abdul Rahman from the Umm Suqueim Public School was placed third.
Other than the all-expense paid three-day trip to Incheon, Dinmukhamad was presented with a cash award of $5,000 (Dh18,364), a gold medal, a certificate and a week stay at The Atlantis, Dubai by Shaikh Ahmad Fahad Al Sabah, Chairman, OCA. Nadera received $3,000 and a certificate while the girl from Dubai got $2,000 and a certificate.
"The aim of this award is to create an awareness on sport among our youngsters, and that is why the theme of the painting competition was aACAyMy Asian Games, My Hope'," explained Al Kamali.
Le Thu Phuong from Vietnam and Ugyen Phuntsho from Bhutan were placed fourth and fifth and also made the trip to Incheon to join the top three on stage at the presentation.
