Ashwin replaces Jadeja in Rest of India squad.

Summary: Side strain puts Indian all-rounder on the sidelines

Mumbai: Star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has replaced injured fellow spinner Ravindra Jadeja in the Rest of India (RoI) squad for the Irani Cup.

Jadeja, who has suffered a side strain, will be out of action for an indefinite period.

This will be a comeback of sorts to domestic cricket for Ashwin. He had decided to opt out of the recently concluded Deodhar Trophy as he was advised a week's rest.

However, according to the BCCI, he has now recovered and has been declared fit to play.

Finger spinners Ashwin and Jadeja selection for next year's World Cup seems unlikely at the moment with wrist spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav doing a fine job for India.

However, Ashwin's performance in the IPL will hold the key for him not just as captain of Kings XI Punjab but also as a senior bowler who is ready to unleash leg-spin in the tournament to be played in April-May.

Karun Nair has been named the skipper of the Rest of India squad while they have also got promising players like Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal in their ranks. The Rest of India will face the Ranji Trophy champions in Nagpur from March 14-18.

Rest of India Squad: Karun Nair (Captain), Prithvi Shaw, Abhimanyu Easwaran, R Samarth, Mayank Agarwal, Hanuma Vihari, KS Bharat (WK), R Ashwin, Jayant Yadav, Shahbaz Nadeem, Anmolpreet Singh, Siddarth Kaul, Ankit Rajpoot, Navdeep Saini, Atit Sheth
