Asda.

One of the last to move into personal finance, launching its range of products only two years ago, it offers car, home, travel, pet and life cover, as well as a child trust fund.

It also offers a credit and store card.

WHAT IT COSTS

Cards: Stuart Glendinning describes Asda's credit card as "not the best, it's okay." The rate varies between 13.8pc and 28.8pc, depending on a person's credit rating.

It includes a zero per cent rate on balance transfers for six months.

However, it does earn 0.5pc back on every pound spent on the card, which comes in the form of vouchers sent out every November to use in Asda.

The storecard, aimed at borrowers with a poor credit rating, also charges between 13.8pc and 28.8pc, and has a credit limit of only pounds 250. But it also earns 0.5pc back on every pound you spend on the card, so an pounds 80 weekly shop in Asda would earn pounds 20.50 in money-off vouchers.

Insurance: Asda claims to be among the most competitive insurance providers. Customers who apply online qualify for between 5pc and 15pc in discounts and there is up to a 70pc no claims discount for careful drivers on its car insurance.

Savings: Child trust funds have been introduced by the Government as a way of making sure that babies born on or after September 1, 2002 have a financial head-start when they reach 18.

The Government starts you off with a voucher worth at least pounds 250, plus a further contribution on the child's seventh birthday.

Asda is one of many providers now offering one of these tax-free savings accounts.

Anyone opening an Asda child trust fund also receives a George gift card worth up to pounds 25.
