Ascot confident redevelopment will finish on time.

ASCOT remains on course to reopen on May 27, 2006 on completion of its pounds 185 million development programme, according to chief executive Douglas Erskine-Crum, writes Andrew Scutts. However, Erskine-Crum admitted yesterday that ``some parts of the development are slightly behind schedule'', and that the timetable ``remains very challenging''.

Doubts about whether construction workers could meet Ascot's deadlines have been expressed from the outset of the ambitious programme, but the racecourse executive has yet to voice any real concern - at least publicly - that the track might not be ready for the 2006 Royal meeting.

``We're still confident that we will be staging our fixture on Saturday, May 27, 2006, about three weeks before the Royal meeting starts,'' said ErskineCrum.

``Construction is going all right. Some parts of the racecourse development are slightly ahead of schedule, some are slightly behind.

``We're particularly pleased with progress on the track and underpass. We are behind with the grandstands but intend to catch up during the summer schedule.''

This year, Royal Ascot at York begins on Tuesday, June 14 and finishes on Saturday, June 18.

Newbury hosts the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes on July 23.
