As good as in my day; MAILBAG.

THOSE who attended the Friday evening performance of The Sorcerer by the Huddersfield & District G & S Society at the Lawrence Batley Theatre were treated to a delightful evening of music and mirth. This very talented society, of which I had the privilege and pleasure of being one of the founder members 50 years ago, gave their not inconsiderable all to entertain a somewhat sparse audience who nevertheless responded with enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment. There is a tendency for hoary old has-beens like myself to denigrate and say "hmm, not bad but not as good as in my day!" This performance was every bit as good as my day, perhaps even somewhat better considering we had no proper theatre to stage our performances way back in the old days. The Sorcerer is not one of the better-known Savoy operas and there are one or two discrepancies in the plot, but this did not detract from the enthusiasm and sheer talent that came across the footlights to delight everyone present. Well done, Huddersfield G & S Society, I'm proud of you.
