Arunachal could contribute to EU-India bilateral trade ties.

Itanagar, May 18 ( ANI ): The eight-member European Union ambassadorial delegation headed by Joao Cravinho has sought to know the trade potential and the challenges confronting of Arunachal Pradesh, so that the EU, presently having 50.7 percent trade with India worth 100 billion dollars in 2011 (49.3 percent India to EU), could balance trade by venturing into this state.

The European Union having very close ties with India is playing a pivotal role in various fields in the global interest, particularly in mitigating the dangerous impacts of climate change.

The ambassadors, including Miloslav Stasek (Czechoslovakia), Borislav Kostov (Bulgaria), Janos Terenyi (Hungary), Terhi Hakala (Finland), Piotr Klodkowski (Poland), Marian Tomasik (Slovakia) and German charge-d-affairs Cord Meier-Klodt were interacting with Arunachal Pradesh lawmakers.

The state lawmakers sought the EU's help for speedy reopening of the historic Stillwell Road that links Assam's Ledo with Kunming in China, as it could be the bridge between the underdeveloped North East region and the rich South East Asian nations.

While interacting with the members of the Arunachal Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) on Thursday, Cravinho said the business sector is one of the major players in widening bilateral relations between the EU and India, and that Arunachal could contribute significantly in that direction.

Briefing diplomats representing 35 nations (Cravinho alone represents 27 nations), ACCI president Techi Lala enumerated the uniqueness of unexplored Arunachal - Global travel icon, Lonely Planet, recently selected Arunachal Pradesh as the fourth best place to travel in the world, terming it 'the last of the great Shangri-Las', and the least green house gases emitting state in India with over 50,000 sq km of moderate to very dense forests (which is equivalent to 550 million cubic metre growing stock or living assets).

The state is on the move with work on laying the 1,544-km two-lane Trans-Arunachal-Highway in progress, while railway and air connectivity is being improved to overcome communication bottlenecks, and the proposed tapping of 57,000 MW hydropower potential when the South Asia Grid plan is in the offing to transmit power to SE Asian countries.

The first fixed-wing chartered plane with tourists landed at Mechuka along the China border on April 25 last, indicating tourism expansion. The concept of Arunachal Hut, proposed by the ACCI, is also in the offing as an umbrella to showcase the State's trade potentials, among others.

With the GoAP's investment-friendly Industrial Policy-2008 and Public Private Partnership (PPP) Policy in place, the ACCI, has been working as a catalyst to create an atmosphere conducive to investors, Lala said, and expressed hope that Arunachal would become an international trade hub with the EU's cooperation.

ACCI chief adviser Pradeep Kumar informed about the State's orange bowl Wakro (in Lohit district) whose products are being exported to Bangladesh, benefiting the garden owners.

Cravinho sought more details and nodded in the affirmative when Kumar sought the EU's help for technology transfer to produce commercial variety of orchids having global market. ( ANI )
