Artists in the schools

THE ARTIST-IN-EDUCATION Program is currently in its fifth year in our city. The program is funded by a matching grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and the local school district. The artist's salary is paid equally by these sources, as are funds for supplies and guest artists. The local district guarantees studio space for the artist to work in.

The primary purpose of the Artist-In-Education program is to expose students to professional people who make their living from their artwork. The artist is "in residence" or within easy access to the students. The benefits of the program, however, have included much more than mere observance of the artists.

The artists come into our classrooms at all levels from elementary through high school. They provide interesting demonstrations and discussions of their own work, and involve the students in projects in their medium. Because of their specialization, their skills often go beyond those of the regular art teacher's expertise, and new horizons are opened to both the students and the teacher. Special equipment and materials which would not normally be available are often brought into use along with the new ideas. The resulting work is fresh and exciting.

Another major benefit of the Artist-In-Education program is the connection that these professional people have with other professionals in the art world. Our community has benefited by demonstrations and workshops from ceramists, printmakers, painters and clay animators. These visits have culminated in some exciting results, such as ceramic murals, animated films and avantgarde collage tiles.

In addition to their work in the schools our artists-in-residence have offered the community interesting lectures and slide presentations as well as evening courses in their medium for adult continuing education. Our current artist has even gotten the city council involved in a project to transform old parking meter poles into sculptural forms in our uptown district.

Each Artist-In-Education has left his or her own mark with us. Between the work at the schools and with the community at large, they have been kept very busy, and we certainly get our money's worth. I, for one, am grateful for this program, and am glad that our school district has chosen to participate in it. Too often teachers get into routines and repetitive activities, and this program keeps reminding us of new possibilities. I hope it will continue so that we may reap the benefits.
