Artist: People will grow to love my work; NEWS WIRE.

THE artist behind the dead tree and elephant sculptures in Kirkby town centre has defended his works.

Geoff Wood said he believed the people of Kirkby would grow to love the sculptures.

But he admitted regrets about the way the tree had been installed, with only the trunk erected first and left "half-dug up, unexplained and surrounded by rubbish" for some time.

The artist won a contract for the artworks to complement the planned Tesco store in 2012 and had started work when the supermarket dropped out.

He said: "It felt the rug had been lifted from under us - so many people had a stake in that new store.

"Residents will start to feel the artwork is theirs and start to love it."
