Art school cool.

Sarah, 17, sketches, paints and sews her own designs. By mixing from-the-mall staples with unique vintage pieces, she rocks a look that's totally chic--and all her own.

How would you describe your look?

I tend to go with vintage things and look for more unique stuff

Any labels that you love to mix with your vintage stuff?

I really love Free People. [They have] fabrics and pieces you don't see every day. It's not a completely neat look. Also, I like Delia's for jeans. They fit really well. I have a pair of dark, straight jeans from there. They're adorable.

How does your art influence your choices?

I'm used to being creative from painting. When I'm getting dressed, I think of what stands out to me.

What's one piece in your closet you cannot live without?

I have a spoon ring my mom gave me. She got it when she was 13, and now I wear it every day. Things that tell stories are really cool. I have a necklace from my boyfriend that I always wear, even if It doesn't always go with my outfit.

How do you stretch your shopping budget?

I love Filene's Basement. You can get great pieces there. I like designer jeans, but then pair them with an inexpensive top.

When did your style start to really become totally yours?

In sixth grade, I got a purse that had paillettes on it. After I got it, I noticed other people started to get them, too. That was the first time I really stepped out. I was like, "Whoa! I shouldn't be scared to be the first one to get something." If I like It, there's a reason. No matter what everyone else thinks, I like it.

What is your one cold weather must-have?

I have a pair of Hard Tail [yoga pants], and during the winter I wear them all the time. They look nicer than sweat pants. They're probably the most expensive thing I own, but I get good use out of them.

What's your best style tip?

Get something unique and put that with your more basic stuff. Always add something that's your own. And every once in a while, try something new and different than what you normally wear. It may be something you end up loving.
