Art as you run to the plane.

Art as you run to the plane

At one airport in the United States, just getting to your departure gate can be an art adventure. San Francisco International boasts an excellent permanent collection of contemporary art--displayed in all three terminals--including pieces by nationally acclaimed Bay Area artists Wayne Thiebaud and William T. Wiley.

The largest exhibition space, however, is devoted to changing exhibits. The North Terminal's 250-yard corridor (to United Airlines gates 70 through 90) offers travelers a long amble through humorous, thought-provoking popular art. Each show has a central theme. Last year, exhibits included the "Chair Show," a historical overview of the chair's evolution; and the "Right Foot Show," featuring artists' renderings of the foot and of the shoes we wear--or could never possibly wear.

This month and next, see "Tin Toy Dreams"--a funny, funky collection of more than 800 antique tin toy cars, planes, robots, monsters, and wind-ups. The toys are from the collection of Teruhisa Kitahara, founder of the Yokohama Toys Museum in Japan.

SFO is the only airport in the nation with regularly scheduled art exhibitions and a full-time staff to manage them, and it claims the most extensive permanent art collection. Stop at the Travelers Aid booths in the North and South terminals for a brochure on the current show and a guide to the permanent collections. Displays are on view 24 hours a day.
