Armless, pregnant woman joins Nelson.
A statue of an armless, pregnant woman will fill the empty fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square.The controversial work by British artist Marc Quinn will be displayed for at least a year from spring 2005 at the historical central London site.
A second sculpture by Germany's Thomas Schutte was also selected by the Fourth Plinth Commissioning Group to replace Quinn's work for a further 12 to 18 months.
Quinn, aged 40, from London, who once made a refrigerated cast of his head using nine pints of his own blood, said he hoped his work, Alison Lapper Pregnant, would introduce some femininity to the square.
The statue is a portrait of his friend, disabled artist Alison Lapper, when she was eightand-a-half months pregnant.
