Armed police guard prison van after breakdown.

ARMED police guarded a prison van on the A66 yesterday- after it broke down while transporting a prisoner.

Cleveland Police were called to the scene at 9am after the GeoAmey van broke down on the westbound carriageway, near Preston Farm, Stockton.

Another prison van also had to be called and the prisoner was transferred into the second van without incident. Armed police guarded the scene.

It is not yet known whether the van was en route to prison or to court at the time it broke down.

The scene was cleared by 9.45am and the broken down van was recovered.

Police say no section of the road had to be closed as a result and it is not thought there was any disruption to traffic.
